PSYCHOLOGY IN THE PHILIPPINES, Indigenous Psychology and the Third World.-

Psychology in the Third World has a short or a long history depending upon how one looks at it. In fact, there are some who argue that there is no such thing as Third World psychologies, much less a history of indigenous psychologies. If one happens to disagree with the latter position, let him be comforted by the thought that acceptance and interest in indigenous psychologies is forthcoming anyway. After all it is now recognized that “natives” of far away countries have their own religion, art, medicine, and philosophy. Of course, labels are still used to distinguish them from western forms such as can be seen from reference to “pagan religions” ,”primitive art”, “folk medical practice,” or “implicit ethnic philosophy”. It is just another step to grant them a “psychology.”

After generously or even reluctantly conceding a “psychology to a Third World country, (it helps to put it quotation marks or qualify it with the word “indigenous” or even label it “nonscientific”) it becomes easier to discuss and see a history of psychology in the Philippines. Form the bulong of the early Filipinos, the psychotherapy practiced babaylans from the remote past of the present day: the beliefs, practices, and psychology of the natives which the early Christian missionaries aimed to changed and almost successfully destroyed in its written form; to the present issues of modernization which sometimes equated with westernization, Philippines and Filipino Psychology is very much alive.
It is admittedly unlikely that the manuscripts destroyed by Chirino and his companions are psychology dissertations. Some of said manuscripts may even be no more than love notes from one native to another. But who are we to pre-judge their importance one way or the other? Whatever they may be the sense of loss felt by Filipinos can only be shared by every psychologist interested in the history of psychology in the Third World countries especially if he is interested in indigenous psychology. Fortunately, in much the same sense that we can have a literature (written) and oral tradition (unwritten), we can also argue for a psychological tradition apart from a psychological literature in every country of the world.
The bases of an indigenous psychology in history and culture have been discussed in another article (Enriquez 1975). Suffice it say that in particular, the following were identified as bases for an indigenous national psychology: 1. Early or traditional psychology, 2. Man and Diwa (consciousness and meaning or the local conception and definition of the psyche as a focus of psychological interest), 3. Psychology of pagbabagong-isip(reawakening as an attitude and as a stage in the development of national consciousness), 4.psychology of behavior and human abilities (western psychology has much to contribute on this), 5. Social issues and problems and 6. Native languages, culture and orientation
(from the book of Behavioral Sciences pp.496 U.P-diliman Press)

In the particular case of the Philippines, the upholding and interactions among these bases occurred in the context of continuous
Struggle (or give and take, if one please) between the indigenous culture and the Western concerns and points-of-view in psychology.

GAMBLING IN THE PHILIPPINES

Gambling is the wagering of money or other valuables on the outcome of a game or other event. Gambling has been known throughout recorded history. The games most closely associated with gambling usually involved a heavy element of chance. Whereas POKER, for instance, requires skill to play well, the outcome of the game is determined primarily by the distribution of the cards. Many casino games, such us ROULETTE and craps, are dedicated solely by chance. Betting on the outcome of sporting events especially on LOTTERY is perhaps the most wide spread legal form of gambling, and in many countries like here in the Philippines. some wagering is sponsored by the government. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) is the Philippines second largest contributor of revenue after the Tax Authority. There are quite a few advantages to gambling in the Philippines. First of all, the Philippines is a highly-regulated jurisdiction and the casinos are owned/operated and/or regulated by the National government. You can count on fair play. Also, as the cost of doing business in the Philippines is relatively low, a wider variety of stakes can be offered High stakes betting is widely available at the VIP clubs/rooms all over the country. Lastly, the Philippines is a beautiful country to visit and is English-speaking. All the games are in English and all the dealers speak English fluently. Great games and a great vacation await. Online gambling has been legal in the Philippines 10 years ago. It was in that year that the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) became the sole operator of gambling in the Asian country.
Pagcor operates online casinos, bingo, and sports betting sites as well as land based establishments.
The church has its say while the companies, and others too, argue over who has the right to issue licenses and with what government permission, it is a critic from outside the industry that has drawn most attention. Archbishop Oscar Cruz has faced libel charges after 20 female employees at Pacgor complained against him. It was back in Arroyo’s administration at First gentleman’s birthday party that Archbishop Cruz made his notorious comments. He called the women "pitiful GROs," a reference to guest relations officers. The women demanded an apology from Archbishop Cruz, who so happens to be the head of the People’s Crusade against Gambling. No apologies in his defense, the Archbishop said he was actually trying to defend the women, a line of defense he will be able to clarify when he will be arraigned in court. Today, as throughout history, gambling is not confined to any economic stratum. Compulsive gambling is recognized as a sickness, and such organizations as Gamblers Anonymous exist for the purpose of providing help.

FILIPINO PSYCHOLOGY AS A PERSPESCTIVE

Psychology as a scientific discipline has been partial to universal findings, or at least makes modest claims to “generalizability”. The history of psychology as it has evolved in the west and the western tradition can be interpreted as moving towards this goal. In a sense, universality is the motive behind the series of systematically replicated experiments from rats to humans; from the laboratory to the field. The psychologists are no longer contended with the sophomore white students from American colleges or universities; they are now equally interested in Blacks and other groups. In fact, they have gone beyond the convenience of captive university classes in the many countries of the world and just like other colleagues in Anthropology would now occasionally risk the inconvenience of “mud huts and mosquitoes”. While this development might not always be welcomed as a socio-political development,(i.e., more and more countries say no to cross-cultural researchers , it is probably a turning point in the growth of western psychology for the data base of western psychology is now much broader.
It should be stressed however that a broader data base is far from adequate in assuring a universal psychology unless alternative perspectives from non-western psychologies are put to use.

SOCIETY BEAUTY

SOCIETY BEAUTY..
Beauty is a characteristic of a person, animal, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, meaning, or satisfaction. Beauty is studied as part of aesthetics, sociology, social psychology, and culture, for perfection.
The experience of “beauty” often involves the interpretation of some entity as being in balance and harmony with nature, which may lead to feelings of attraction and emotional well-being. Because this is a subjective experience, it is often said that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” In its most profound sense, beauty may engender a salient experience of positive reflection about the meaning of one’s own existence. A subject of beauty is anything that resonates with personal meaning.
Effects on society Beauty presents a standard of comparison, and it can cause resentment and dissatisfaction when not achieved. People who do not fit the “beauty ideal” may be ostracized within their communities. The television sitcom Ugly Betty portrays the life of a girl faced with hardships due to society’s unwelcoming attitudes toward those they deem unattractive. However, a person may also be targeted for harassment because of their beauty. In Malena, a strikingly beautiful Italian woman is forced into poverty by the women of the community who refuse to give her work for fear that she may “woo” their husbands.
Studies have even shown that handsome criminals receive lighter sentences than less attractive convicts. How much money a person earns may also be influenced by physical beauty. One study found that people low in physical attractiveness earn 5 to 10 percent less than ordinary looking people, ho than those who are considered good looking. Discrimination against others based on their appearances is known as lookism. According to St. Augustine “Beauty is indeed a good gift, of God: but that the good may not think it a great good, Gog dispenses it even to the wicked.”
